Above: Hail Claudius the Idiot! I painted this miniature. N.B.: My painting technique has improved quite a bit since I did this miniature.
A BRIEF HISTORY OF AN INSTITUTION ORIGINATING IN ANOTHER MILENNIUM:
Jonathan Lim's Wargames Painting Service
Est. 1998
IN DECEMBER OF 1998, in the dying days of the last Glorious Milennium; in the final days before the Age of Aquarius; in the days when there was still a World Trade Centre, and I was getting ready to study Ancient History...
BACK IN THOSE DAYS, I had a dream. The dream involved the amount of money I was spending on miniatures, compared with the pleasure I got from painting them.
HMMM...I THOUGHT...if I could paint miniatures, and somehow get people to pay me for that...then I'd have more money to buy miniatures!
(This is called Wargamer's Logic, and it seems to be up there with Ayer's Positivism and Aristotle's Logic of the Excluded Middle).
A FEW PRACTICE MINIATURES LATER, I found that my painting techniques were producing very nice results indeed. I discovered the joys of painting using the "Games Workshop" style (all colour and no dirt) and the Tamiya style (all dirt and no colour). I discovered the joys of combining the two, and not combining them at all.
FINALLY I GOT A CUSTOMER. Some Bretonnian Knights were my first job; and I was paid a grand total of $58 for my labours.
SINCE THEN my technique has rapidly improved, as has the length of my customer list. I have had none but satisfied customers, and I have plenty of regular customers who seem to love my style. A "Jonathan Lim" Original is now a common sight on the wargames tables of Sydney, Australia.
LET IT BE KNOWN AND PROCLAIMED that Jonathan Lim's Wargames Painting Service still stands today as a testament to the longevity of a casual hobby-business.
AN ENTIRE MILENNIUM afterwards, I am still painting marvellous, miniature works of art, that can grace any wargames table. Five long years afterwards - as we enter a new age - as I enter Law School - Jonathan Lim's Wargames Painting Service lives on!!!
WHAT BENEFITS DOES MY SERVICE PROVIDE?
1. Extremely fine painting, which is not done with a psychology of mass-production, but fired by my love of the hobby
2. A technique that has continually grown and changed during the years, so that my results, always absolutely stunning, continually improve as NEW and SORT OF SECRET techniques are developed. You can pick a Jonathan Lim Original by its style; and also what year it was painted!
3. Years of constant experience with discriminating customers, with whom I would be happy to put you into contact, should you wish it! I have never had a disappointed customer at all; and most of my customers are repeat customers (and familiar friends) who just know that my service is the best!
4. Lest it be feared that this is MERELY an advertisement, let it be known that EVERY MINIATURE painted by JONATHAN LIM is infused with a strange spirit that will CAUSE IT TO WIN EVERY BATTLE!!!
(Warning: Your definition of "winning" may differ from that of Jonathan Lim's Wargames Painting Service, its subsidiaries and shareholders.)
RESTRICTIONS: Sadly I can currently only paint armies for customers within or near Sydney, Australia. Sorry, world.
SPEED OF PAINTING: I have often been assured that my painting is phenomenally fast - I can paint one figure to a high standard every twenty minutes. I work in batches - perhaps that might explain my speed...
PRICE LIST: Well, there is a catch to any profoundly fulfilling activity isn't there? Well, I did initially go into this for money to buy more miniatures...
